Both are seasoned tech policy professionals in Brasília. Karen previously worked on Brazil policy issues at Google and Didi, a ridesharing company. Before joining Mercado Bitcoin in January 2022, Julien led Brazil government affairs for Experian.
Karen and Julien’s expertise was critical in the successful effort to pass crypto legislation in Brazil, which was signed into law by then-President Jair Bolsonaro in December 2022. Once fully implemented, this new law will create a regulatory framework and licensing regime for crypto businesses in the country and should establish Brazil as a world leader in crypto regulation.
In this joint interview, Karen and Julien give us a behind the scenes look at the law itself, the drama and theatrics surrounding its passage and the next steps in implementing the law in 2023.
